I started the Richmond Tigers Serious Supporters Group back in 2014 when we were sitting 3 and 10 on the ladder and all the Tiger love in the world was almost completely exhausted. Yes we weren’t travelling well but I was simply disgusted the way Social Media was treating the Tigers and how we were treating one another. So I decided to start my own privately run, fan operated Facebook page, administered by individuals who loved and supported the Richmond Football Club as I did and where only serious Richmond supporters would be entitled to be members.
It was to be a group where all things RICHMOND and not the AFL was to be discussed, with robust, lively conversations and debates carried out in a respectful, fun and friendly manner through thoughtful positive posts and comments.
The group would have no affiliation at all to the Richmond Football Club playing in the Australian Football League but the Tigers would be worshipped and adored by all who joined. I had hoped for maybe a couple of hundred likeminded Tigers to talk to back then the way I wanted to do so and as of today we have 19,000 members!
I must say it’s been a bit overwhelming how rtssg.com has taken off! I just wanted to set a really high standard for the group and I think the reason people are really warning to it is because it’s interesting, informative, relevant, up to date, and a heap of fun for all ages. I hope you already can tell enough about me that I am a serious tiger and I want a place to talk to other tiger supporters in a safe, clean and supportive environment.
RTSSG is committed to keeping the Richmond Tigers Serious Supporters Group page a Fun, Clean, Safe, Family friendly area for “ALL” Serious Tigers supporters and we employ an absolute ZERO tolerance level to opposition supporters, bad language, aggression, negativity or the bagging and abuse of other Members, Team Members, Club Admin or the Richmond Football club in general both past and present.
We take our footy pretty seriously and we have tough guidelines and rules that in place so that all can enjoy and we make no apologies for our stance and I will not budge from that as many people really enjoy RTSSG the way it is now.
What we love on this site is serious supporters showing their passion for the Yellow and Black who conduct themselves in a lively, clean and fun manner; we encourage respectful debate of any items or topics relating to the Richmond Tigers Football Club.
We also particularly love Serious Tigers Supporters sharing with us through either posts or comments their questions, opinions, enthusiasm, memories, stories, memorabilia, and favourite Tiger photos and yes even your frustrations! But most of all we love members who respect other members.
Well three years later and Bill Meaklim is our patron and Rhett Bartlett amongst others is a regular contributor and the Tigers are the reigning premiers after having belted the Adelaide Crows in 2017 and this part of the journey is complete and now we move to the next stage…..
Towards the end of season 2017 I decided to try something different. It was the third last game against our eventual Qualifying Final opponent Geelong and they had done a number on the Tiger members for tickets and it was near impossible to get a ticket at their home ground Kardinia Park.
So the question was do I stay at home and watch the game on my 65 inch TV with surround sound or do I do something else? Before I knew it I was swamped with messages asking me what I was doing for the day and then I suggested that my place was available. Big Mistake! Before I knew it I was swamped and it became very obvious my place was now too small for the game.
I then suggested that we go and watch the game at the Sporting Globe Hotel in Richmond and agreement was reached and then we decided to tell people on the RTSSG that we were gathering there and everyone was welcome to join us. To my surprise we had over 100 people wanting to join us which was fantastic as we were able to have our own private area to watch the game. It was a blast even though we lost but a Tigeriffic day was had by all but a seed to the future had been sewn.
As fate may have it we had another away game and this time it was Fremantle so we went with the same thing. This time, more people came and those that were there the week before had returned once again. This time it was Tiger heaven. We smash Freo by 100 points and the atmosphere was electric! We had hit on something………
What struck me most was the different type of Tiger supporters who attended the first two functions. Young; Old; Male; Female; Singles; Married and everything in between! Then it dawned on me that we had actually built a bridge over the social divide. We had all moved from the hidden world of Social Media to actually interacting on a personal level and sharing our passion for the Tigers in a shared environment and it was fantastic as I knew I had made lifelong friends to share my passion with and I remember smiling thinking this was exactly what I wanted when I first started my social media journey! I had to explore this more………
After the success of the away games more functions were organized at the Sporting Globe including a brilliant night as we cheered Dusty to a Brownlow; An afternoon watching a Grand Final replay after we were all held spellbound by RTSSG Patron and official Richmond historian Bill Meaklim and another night with Konrad Marshall talking about his book “A Season With Richmond” which was stunning. So the season came to an end but my brain wouldn’t stop clicking over thinking how we could build on this foundation and this is where the idea for the Season Launch came in. Get as many players and areas of the club I could and plonk them smack bang in the middle of the Tiger Faithful! It was a fantastic day and many, many more will come!
But it was after all, just the beginning.
